Open an Image
Save a Document

PROCEDURE
Task 1: Add Layers to an Active Document
1.   Select the Layers panel.
2.   Click the Layers Options button, and then click New Layer.
The new layer is inserted directly above the active layer.
Task 2: Duplicate a Layer
1.   Select the Layers panel.
2.   Select the layer you want to duplicate.
3.   Click the Layers Options button, and then click Duplicate Layer.
4.   Enter a name for the new layer.
5.   To place the layer in another open document, click the Document list arrow, and then select a document.
6.   Click OK.
Task 3: Move/Copy Layers Between Documents
1.   Open the documents in which you want to move layers.
2.   To have more than one document in view, click the Window menu, point to Arrange, and then click Cascade or Tile.
3.   Click on the document containing the layer you want to move.
4.   Drag the layer from the Layers panel into the window of the destinationdocument.
• If you prefer copy and paste, you can select the layer, click the Edit
menu, and then click Copy in the source, and then click the Edit menu, and then click Paste, Paste Into, or Paste in Place in the destination.
Photoshop creates a new layer with a layer copy in the document.
Task 4: Use layer via copy and layer via cut
Another way to create a layer is to use the Layer via Copy command on the Layer menu.
1.    Make a selection on a layer or background and choose Layer→New→Layer via cut.
2.    The copied selection is placed on a new layer with the default name of Layer 1.
(You can duplicate this with the Layer via Cut command, but now, Photoshop deletes the selected area from the source layer or background, and places it on the new layer. The source layer is left with a gaping hole. If you used the background for the source, your background color fills the space. Remember that you can use these two commands only within the same image, not between multiple images.)
Note that you can now select multiple layers and perform the Layer via Copy and Cut commands.
